Vale | Brian Walsh – Screen Producers Australia (SPA) today join in the deep sadness and grieving of the Australian Screen industry at the news of the sudden passing of Brian Walsh.

Brian’s contribution over many decades has shaped our industry, grown our reputation on the world stage and given us all an untold number of iconic entertainment moments ingrained in our memories.

Brian was a passionate supporter of the screen production community i and a dear friend to Screen Producers Australia.

“Today’s news has come as a shock and deeply saddened myself, the SPA team, our members and the Australian screen sector as a whole. Brian’s contributions to Australian television during his career have helped shape Australian culture and identity on screens locally and internationally, and for this, we will be eternally appreciative and grateful.

“Brian was an avid supporter of opportunities to bring about progress and change in our industry and was a key figure over many years at our SCREEN FOREVER conference. His commitment, dedication, and drive for the advancement of the Australian screen industry and Australian screen stories – particularly television drama – was staggering and will be sorely missed,” said SPA CEO Matthew Deaner.

Over a number of years, Brian has steered riveting, insightful discussions with the biggest global media executives on SCREEN FOREVER stages for the benefit of all industry in attendance.

Brian delivered the Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture at SCREEN FOREVER in 2008, honouring its namesake’s legacy and emphasising the importance of independent production in Australia’s cultural life.

He worked with and commissioned many of our SPA member’s screen projects and during Foxtel’s 28-year history led a notable shift in the quality and strength of Australian productions – particularly drama.
