In Mordialloc (Boonwurrung Country) Kris Smith uncovers some gems tucked away in the industrial backstreets. Like the Milhouse Canteen, where brothers Damien and Jarryd toast mouthwatering sandwiches in a laidback atmosphere. For a bit of movement and a sophisticated golfing experience, Kris heads down the road to Golf Studio, Australia’s largest indoor private golf club, complete with a driving range, simulators and a putting zone. He rounds off the day with a beer brewed at the family-run Wolf of the Willows brewery.
Guest presenter Yvie Jones explores Northcote. At All Are Welcome, a bakery started by Boris Portnoy, former head pastry chef at a three-Michelin-star venue in California’s Napa Valley, she digs into some moreish bakes and enjoys a coffee. Next, she finds the Vintage Tool Shop, a vintage oasis for those who love DIY jobs or collecting handmade tools. Yvie talks tools with owner Mike Subritzky before meeting Hind Karim of Free to Feed, which creates empowering job opportunities for refugees and asylum seekers.
Madeline Spark is on a road trip to Castlemaine (Dja Dja Wurrung Country) to try some local cuisine and explore the art gallery inside the Old Castlemaine Gaol.
Famous for its indigenous history and goldfields, the region is also an artists’ haven. The gaol houses the Bromley Collection Museum, the collection of one of Australia’s most renowned artistic duos, David and Yuge Bromley. Madeline also finds the town’s new brewery bar, Love Shack Brewing Co, and pops by Origini Cafe, a coffee spot that’s become more restaurant than cafe, with a menu of Italian classics.
And Todd Woodbridge takes a tour around the historic suburb of Parkville (Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country). At the charming Cafe Piccolina on Morrah Street, the pink terracotta exteriors and hearty dishes welcome both locals and visitors with open arms. On Royal Parade, Todd steps into Naughtons Hotel, a beautifully renovated 150-year-old building exuding class and comfort, and chats to owner Ryan Berry about the hotel’s cosy accommodation options and meals for any occasion.
