The Proposal

April on Shelter

April on Shelter – Shelter highlights for the month of April include The Proposal, New Directions, Softness: Designing a City and Mies Van Der Rohe: The Houses of Lange & Esters. Join an artist’s quest to democratise and share the work of a Pritzker Prize winning architect; examine how post-war Japanese architecture was brought to the West; discover the “softness” movement seeking to sustainably revolutionise urban design; and see the earliest moves into modernity in Bauhaus-Germany this April on SHELTER. ACCESS TO ARCHITECTURE: THE PROPOSAL – AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE Known as “the artist among architects”, Pritzker Prize-winning Mexican architect Luis Barragán is among the world’s most celebrated architects of the 20th century. Upon his death in 1988, much of his work was locked away in a Swiss bunker, hidden from the world’s view, aggressively “protected” and kept from the public by its copyright holders. In an attempt to resurrect Barragán’s life and art, boundary redefining artist Jill Magid creates a daring proposition that becomes a fascinating artwork in itself – a high-wire act of negotiation that explores how far an artist will go to democratise access to art. By cultivating relationships with Barragán’s family, admirers, institutions, and the rights holders – including extensive correspondence with the director of the Barragan Foundation – Magid consequently constructs a thoughtful love story between the director, herself, and the architect. THE PROPOSAL is a startling, provocative work that forces the viewer into reckoning with how an artist’s story is told; and who is permitted to do the telling. THE PROPOSAL (83 mins) USA 2019 (Available 3 April) EASTERN INNOVATION: NEW DIRECTIONS During his numerous visits to Japan in the 1950s, renowned Australian architect Robin Boyd became fascinated with post-war Japanese architecture.Convinced he had seen the architecture of the future from architects such as Kenzo Tange, Boyd became determined to introduce and implement these learnings to the West, via his essays and books. NEW DIRECTIONS charts the influence of Boyd’s discoveries; and how it would inspire a number of younger Australian architects through the 1960s and 70s to incorporate aspects of Japanese Modernism into their subsequent work. NEW DIRECTIONS (38 mins) Australia 2016 (Available 10 April) SOFTNESS: DESIGNING A CITY When designing a city, softness is rarely the first theme in people’s thoughts. Yet for Italian company i-Mesh, a focus on soft architecture is a forward-thinking strategy to combat the future challenges of urban spaces in a post-pandemic world; and to redesign cities with a focus on quality of life and environmental protection. SOFTNESS explores the unique i-Mesh material and technology, which is seeking to revolutionise architectural design with its lightness, transparency, resistance, flexibility, and sustainability. Through the use of “soft” materials, designers are looking to respond to the continuous needs of transforming spaces using adaptive, temporary, transportable systems while contrasting the effects of urban heat. Featuring discussions with architects, designers, and philosophers such as Kengo Kuma, Gabriele Mastrigli, Ico Migliore, Werner Sobek, Benedetta Tagliabue, Edoardo Tresoldi; who pose radical questions about the meaning of design and living today, this documentary investigates a new model and a new way of looking at the culture of design. “Soft is a vision of the world, a light and circular gaze, impermanent, gentle, systemic.” “Softness is an interweaving of stories and threads.” SOFTNESS: DESIGNING A CITY (42 mins) Italy 2022 (Available 17 April) MIES VAN DER ROHE: THE HOUSES OF LANGE & ESTERS In 1920s Germany textile industry magnate Hermann Lange commissioned avant-garde architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to design two revolutionary residential villas on the outskirts of Krefeld. Open buildings, with glass facades and floating spaces inside, these two villas marked a key point in the modernist architecture movement. However, not all of Mies van der Rohe’s cutting-edge ideas were accepted by the client, and compromises would have to be made. Today, both of the houses are now world-renowned museums; where art meets architecture. Through interviews with Lange’s great-granddaughter and the director of Art Museums in Krefeld, this short documentary unpacks these two houses that began the open concept style of living. “These are the most important buildings between tradition and modernity that have been created in this period.” HOUSES LANGE ESTERS BY MIES VAN DER ROHE (26 mins) Germany 2010 (Available 24 April) More TV Central Shelter content HERE About Shelter Shelter is a premium streaming service bringing you the world’s finest films about architecture & design.  Showcasing award winning feature films, episodic series and shorts, along with dedicated channels such as the Michael Blackwood Architecture Collection, The Design Emotive, 9 Sekunden, Never Too Small, Dwell and green magazine.  Shelter’s curated film library will keep you entertained, creative and inspired.  Handpicked for you by the team at Shelter, no algorithms here. Mario Botta: The Sacred and Profane A

March on Shelter

Shelter highlights for the month of March include Regular or Super, The Burke Museum, Melbourne International and Mario Botta: The Sacred and Profane. Discover the minimalist ethos behind some of North America’s most striking urban landmarks; watch a museum strip back its walls and reveal its treasures to the public; venture back in time into the urbanist shift that defined Melbourne’s skyline; and investigate the oppositional concepts central to the work of an iconic Swiss architect this March on SHELTER. MIES VAN DER ROHE: REGULAR OR SUPER Famous for designing such landmarks as New York’s Seagram Building, Toronto’s Dominion Centre and numerous buildings in Chicago, Mies van der Rohe was best known for his minimalist designs.  An obsession with purity & simplicity and an adherence to his belief that “less is more” influenced the way he combined form & function; creating a connection to the outdoors and architecture that is less removed from life and more reflective of how we actually live.  With a jazz-infused soundtrack, inspired cinematography and commentary from Stanley Tigerman, Rem Koolhaus and Phyllis Lambert; REGULAR OR SUPER brings van der Rohe’s work to life in a documentary that captures the spirit of the man and his brilliant contributions to 20th-century architecture. DESIGN VS BUILD: THE BURKE MUSEUM The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture is the oldest public museum in Washington State, tracing its roots back to 1879, and housing a collection of over 18 million artifacts and specimens; ranging from totem poles and gemstones to dinosaur fossils.  Yet most visitors never got to experience any of these treasures of the past, which remained hidden behind concrete walls and inside research labs.  When the Burke was granted major funding in 2015 for a new building, a bold new idea was presented by Architect Olson Kundig: what if the museum was turned “inside out”?  The final result sought to create a one-of-a-kind museum experience, where guests could look into working research areas and laboratories. But getting there wouldn’t be easy; requiring a delicate transfer of the museum’s millions of unique and treasured items from the old building to the new.  RESIDENT URBANISM: MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL Known for its iconic and striking skyline; the city of Melbourne needed a drastic design shift in the mid-20th century to become what it is today.  Exploring from 1950 to 1980, this feature-length documentary film charts the development of the International Style of corporate architecture and the rise of the glass box, curtained-wall style office building, that would shape the look and feel of Melbourne’s urban centre.  MARIO BOTTA: THE SACRED AND PROFANE Renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta retraces some of the most significant steps of his career, exploring the inner questions that pushed him to investigate the spaces of the sacred and the profane; two coexisting but oppositional concepts that are integral to his work. MARIO BOTTA: THE SACRED AND PROFANE delves into the architect’s worldwide projects and his founding of the Accademia di Architettura and the Teatro dell’Architettura, before diving into his exhibit for the MAXXI Museum in Rome; an installation composed of heterogeneous and highly expressive materials, including a 1:1 scale pavilion and a facade prototype; models; sketches and photographs of his built projects.  Botta’s reflection is explored, complimented and challenged by fellow critics and colleagues Enzo Cucchi, Margherita Guccione, Fulvio Irace, Vittorio Sgarbi and Giuliano Vangi.  About Shelter Shelter is a premium streaming service bringing you the world’s finest films about architecture & design. February on Shelter

Shelter highlights for the month of February include Tiny Spaces: Iceland and Aldo Rossi Design Continue an amazing journey through tiny-house living in Iceland; discover the life & work of the first Italian architect to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize; and join a live stream event with the filmmakers behind TINY SPACES: ICELAND this February on SHELTER. LIVE STREAM EVENT: IN CONVERSATION WITH DAMIEN LIPP & STEPHANIE MAURO-LIPP  Join Andrew Spicer as he hosts a conversation with husband-and-wife filmmaking duo Damien Lipp and Stephanie Mauro-Lipp about their latest project, TINY SPACES: ICELAND.  The Lipps will share behind-the-scenes stories, insights and challenges they faced while capturing the beauty and stories of these tiny spaces and their occupants in Iceland’s rugged and often harsh terrain. This live-stream event starts at 7pm AEST February 25th, and is available exclusively to Shelter subscribers.  SHELTER ORIGINALS – TINY SPACES: ICELAND TINY SPACES: ICELAND continues this February with Episode Three: Water Tower.  Escape the chaos of daily life with TINY SPACES: ICELAND – a series where less is more and a connection to nature is vital.  Enter a water tower converted into a family home; explore a rejuvenated barn given a new life by a local artist; and look back in time through the remarkable Viking-inspired turf houses of Iceland.  A young couple with a passion for minimalism take on a huge challenge when they decide to convert a disused water tower into a modern home for their growing family.  With exceptional views from the top floor, the Water Tower is surrounded by lava fields, mountains and a stunning coastline. After many years of searching for a sanctuary that could function as both a workspace and family home, artist Gudrun Kristjansdottir discovered a derelict barn (built in 1937) on the stunning West Coast of Iceland. Told by many that she should tear the existing structure down, Gudrun enlisted the architects at Studio Bua to help bring a new era of life to this abandoned space.  When the Norwegian Vikings settled in Iceland, they brought with them a tradition of building out of the earth, using natural materials such as wood, uncut stone, and soil. Known as Turf Houses, these structures became the remarkable vernacular architecture of Iceland. Today, contemporary architects are turning to traditional turf building methods for inspiration and choosing to use them in modern Tiny Spaces. BRINGING THE EVERYDAY TO LIFE: ALDO ROSSI DESIGN A documentary covering the life and work of Aldo Rossi, the first Italian architect to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Discovering the curves and secrets of this last amazing achievement, the documentary reflects on the career of one of the most ambitious artists of her time. “I didn’t even know I was a rebel … I just knew there was another thing” ZAHA HADID: AN ARCHITECT, A MASTERPIECE (52 mins) France 2016 (Available 3 October) THE LE CORBUSIER SPIRIT A VERITABLE URBAN LABORATORY: The modernist Firminy Vert, in the Loire region, is the biggest project ever built by Le Corbusier in Europe. An iconic and ambitious project, this utopian vision of a model modernist town was praised as one of Europe’s most accomplished postwar planning exercises. Juxtaposing Director Gilles Coudert’s experience growing up in the unusual and intriguing shapes of Le Corbunne to the influence Le Corbusier’s career has had upon a number of prominent modern artists; the film visits three major sites of Le Corbusier’s work, taking us from the Firminy buildings to the Cité Radieuse in Marseille and to the Cabanon de Roquebrune; and has insights from several contemporary artists on the work of Le Corbusier. THE LE CORBUSIER SPIRIT (52 mins) France 2018 (Available 10 October) RENZO PIANO – ARCHITECT OF LIGHT CREATING ATMOSPHERES Architect Renzo Piano and Director Carlos Saura discuss their view on the relationship between architecture and cinema and show us the magic surrounding the Centro Botín in Cantabria, Spain. Designed to almost float above the Costa de Cantabria, this gigantic arts centre – imagined by Renzo Piano – is a building that through time will modify the soul of the city forever. “Every place has a story to tell, it has its ‘spirit’; a kind of DNA.” “There’s a very subtle thread that connects technique to poetry.” RENZO PIANO: ARCHITECT OF LIGHT – (66 mins) Spain 2017 (Available 17 October) REM KOOLHASS – A KIND OF ARCHITECT UNMATCHED & VISIONARY An engaging and visually inventive profile of the architect, beginning with his family background and early influences. Through interviews with fellow architects, academics and with Koolhaas himself, we see the evolution of his architecture through the development of projects such as the Dutch Embassy in Berlin, the Seattle Library, Casa da Musica in Porto and the unique creative designs for houses and living spaces. The film culminates with the construction of the landmark CC-TV building in Beijing– a very unusual skyscraper built as a loop in space held in place by a “collar” to prevent it from falling. A visually inventive, thought-provoking portrait of the architect. REM KOOLHASS: A KIND OF ARCHITECT (98 mins) Germany 2008 (Available 24 October) MIES IN KREFELD BURGEONING BAUHAUS For over a decade, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886 – 1969) worked almost exclusively for the Krefeld silk manufacturer Hermann Lange and his professional and private associates. Designing two upper middle-class villas, industrial buildings for Verseidag, apartment buildings, a clubhouse, furniture and exhibition stands – the works of Mies van der Rohe commissioned by clients in Krefeld are a testament of this famous architect’s versatility. Exploring the most important creative phase of Mies van der Rohe’s career, MIES IN KREFELD investigates the German region with the highest cluster of his groundbreaking buildings. Using partly unreleased film footage and photographic material, the film offers an insight into the cultural and social milieu in Krefeld in the 20s and 30s, showcases the projects that Mies – partly with his partner and colleague Lilly Reich – built for his Krefeld clients, and visualizes for the first time using 3D animations how three buildings planned by Mies for Krefeld would have looked like had they actually been built.
